Oh-OH! Someone broke the press embargo and posted details of the NEW 2011 Mustang V8 powerplant, confirming that the Ford “Coyote” 5.0 Liter engine will be inserted into the historic ponycar AND produce 412 Horsepower. Mustang Fans around the world shuddered with delight at the twitter, which makes the Mustang only 10HP shy of the much heavier (almost 300 pounds) Camaro. The Camaro has a 6.2 liter powerplant whose pushrods only produce 422 horses.
Autoweek has since released more details, which were supposed to be kept secret until the official unveiling of the 2011 Mustang at the International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Autoweek is saying that the V8 will supply the driver a delightful 390 ft-lb of torque and an incredible 25MPG. Incredible for a V8 in deed! This comes about (per Ford’s head of marketing Jim Farley) because the 5.0L V8’s:
“All-new heads sit atop an all-new aluminum block with cast-iron cylinder sleeves. The wide distance between the heads allows for the intake ports to sit vertically on top of the engine. The engine features four valves per cylinder and twin independent variable valve timing. Tuned exhaust headers eliminate the need for aftermarket headers to let the engine breath better. Inside the engine are a forged-steel full counterweight crankshaft and four-bolt main bearings and high-performance pistons and connecting rods. Peak horsepower is reached at 6,500 rpm.“
Also according to Autoweek, if you like 6 speeds, you’ll like the new Mustang, because that’s your choice. six speed auto or six speed manual. I don’t mean to say that like it’s a bad thing. A 6 speed mated to this engine is going to be TEE-riffic! I can’t wait to drive one!
Heck! I can’t wait to see some official pictures!!!
Someone want to break the embargo on those???
